Australian Aboriginal Desert Art

Artist: Gracie Green
Name of work: Nynmi
Region: Balgo in The Great Sandy Desert
Size: 120 x 40 cm
Description:  Gracie has painted some of her grandmother's dreaming, located in country far to the south of Balgo in The Great Sandy Desert.

This painting depicts part of a Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) story for Gracie's grandfather. A Nungorrayi woman came across two children playing without their parents, so she told the children to hide in a hole while she looked for their parents. Nungorrayi (the brown U shape) went looking, and came across a cave.

From inside the cave came a roaring noise, so she went in to investigate. Inside she found two angry snakes, one was a king brown, the other was a carpet snake.

She grabbed the brown snake and bit its head off, made a fire and ate it.
