Australian Aboriginal Desert Art
Artist: Maxi Tjampitjinpa - 1945 - 1997
Certificate number: MT 860702
Title: Sugar Bag and Water Dreaming - 1987
Size: 130 by 60 cm
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Group/Area: Warlpiri / Yuendumu, Northern Territory
Description:
Central roundel depicts a hole in a tree where sugar ants live - the nectar from their abdomen is a sweet delicacy.

Sinuous lines are thunder and lightening - both dreamings are associated with a site at Waite Creek, west of the Yuendumu community.

The background represents "myriads of flying ants" and is one of the finest examples of Maxi's expertise in the "flicked" style of painting that many artists tried to imitate.

Price (AUD): $12,000
