COOINDA GALLERY
(estab.1987)

Australian Aboriginal Desert Art

Artist: Terry Dhurritjini Yumbulul (Tribal Chief)
Name of work: Butterflies 1986
Region: The Wessell and English Company Islands
Size:
Description:  In the Aboriginal belief, the Butterfly is the carrier of the spirit of people to the resting place. When someone dies the spirit lives on forever and is carried to The Stars by the Butterfly, on it's wings. So, when you see a Butterfly look after it, it may be on a journey to the Stars.

In this painting, we see the waterhole in the centre, which is the beginning of life, with water flowing from it carrying seeds.

The two Butterflies on the side represent everlasting life for the spirit, while all around it, is the infinity of the heavens.

This is a Dhuwa painting belonging to the artist's mother's clan.

The painting is accompanied by a Profile of the Artist.

Group/Area: Tribe - Warramiri
Certificate: CGTY/01
Price (AUD): $5,500
