He wandered out of the desert in 1984 due to extreme drought, with a small tribe, the story making world wide headlines.  He is brother to well-known artists Walala and Robert Tjapaltjarri .

In 1998 the National Gallery of Victoria purchased 11 of his paintings from his first exhibition.
